College Students Moving In; Expect Pittsburgh Traffic Delays

Watch For Street Closures In Oakland

UPDATED: 1:00 pm EDT August 19, 2008

College students are returning to Pittsburgh this week, and various streets will be closed as residents move into dorms.

Traffic will be heavy on Forbes Avenue in the Oakland and Uptown areas, where students are arriving at the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University. ( See Real-Time Traffic Maps)

On Wednesday, traffic is expected to be especially heavy in and around Oakland because of a freshman convocation which begins at 3 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center.

The following street closures are scheduled in Oakland:

  • Bigelow Boulevard will be closed between Fifth and Forbes avenues from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. (Port Authority Route 54C will not service the Carnegie Museum bus stop on Forbes Avenue and the South Craig Street stop while Bigelow is closed.)
  • Lothrop Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
  • University Drive will be closed between Fifth Avenue and O'Hara Street from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
  • University Drive B from Allequippa Street to University Drive will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
  • Ruskin Avenue parking will be restricted from Tuesday through Saturday. Only people who are moving into Ruskin Hall can park there.
