Pittsburgh Is Hot Spot For Alternative Energy Companies, Engineers Say

When it comes to being eco-friendly, city leaders said that Pittsburgh is high on the list of green cities in America.

A wind company is taking notice, and it is opening up new offices and bringing in high-paying jobs to the community.

Everpower already has offices in New York and Portland, Ore. Now, workers said the company is setting up shop in the Lawrenceville neighborhood.

The company isn’t the first wind-energy business to migrate to Pittsburgh, and analysts said it won’t be the last.

"Wind energy is only about 1 percent of electricity supplied in the United States. The government wants to push that to 20 percent sometime in the future," Converteam Conversion Camp worker Bob Misback said.

Converteam manufactures turbine converters and is based out of France. Its North American headquarters is in Pittsburgh.

"Pittsburgh has a good population of very educated people, including engineers. We have a lot of universities here. The steel industry used to be a very technical business," Misback said.

Converteam hired 100 engineers in the past 12 months alone and currently employs 280 workers.

Engineers said the U.S. used more newly generated wind energy than any other country last year.

Scientists said the wind-energy industry will create $1.2 billion in new income for farmers and rural land owners.
